And no, we aren’t just talking about the SPF— we’re talking about your identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identity stolen each year, from credit card skimming to phishing to old-fashioned stealing. Before you hit the road this summer, make sure your identity and your Dakota West Credit Union account are protected, so you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest. Of course though, don’t forget the sunscreen either!
- Set Up Location Controls
Few things are more frustrating than swiping your card on vacation and having it be declined. By setting up location controls in the MY Cards mobile app beforehand, you can ensure that your charges will go through, every time.
- Keep an Eye on Your Account
While it can be all too easy to completely check out while you’re on vacation, make sure you still check in on your accounts. Credit card skimming can happen at any time, and you likely won’t even know it’s happened until you notice a suspicious charge on your account. If you think your Dakota West credit or debit card has been compromised, please call us at 800.411.7590 and select Option 3 when prompted to freeze your card. Or, if you have the Dakota West MY Cards Mobile app, you can turn your card off at any time, and then contact us for next steps.
- Know the Signs
While identity fraud isn’t always 100% avoidable, there are precautions you can take to lower your chances of having your account compromised. Block any unwanted calls, texts, or email addresses, and if you didn’t initiate the conversation or interaction, DO NOT provide someone with your personal information or account number. And, most importantly, trust your intuition— if something doesn’t feel right, chances are good that it probably isn’t.
Dakota West Credit Union will NEVER ask you for your account number, SSN, your birthday, your address, or your username or password. If you receive a call, email, text or other alert while you’re out of town, and are uncertain about its authenticity, please call us at 800.411.7590. Visit our website to learn more about fraud and scams, and how you can avoid them.
